our hiro in HOLLYWOOD....part 1

Comments

for some reason i had a feeling that you would write this post and i know the reason. ;-) really it is so great to read other people's thoughts.

i am selfish when it comes to hiro because i always wanted him the way i liked him the most (i hope that this does not make me a second rated hiro fan because i really do care about him and his career with all of my heart). i can deny that i love hiro in japanese movies, to hear him talking in his mother tomgue, it is just heaven for me

but i also noticed hiro needed this great shake up in his career. i think that he has done all he could for japanese entertainment and now he wants to experience the world cinema. no matter which one.

doing this does not mean that he has turned against his background and culture and NEVER makes him hungry for fame or anything else. simply hiro is just a unique person that likes to better himself in everything he does. he is just perfectionist. he likes to learn and expereince and teach what ever he can. there is nothing wrong with. it is something to be admired for. that is why i LOVE him.

i can't wait for your part 2...

[this is good]
and one more thing, i really think that you should post this on SHIN forum. its actually where it really belongs. it has to be there reiko-chan.
hi issy chan!

oh, it's so nice to hear your thoughts about this subject, my dear. i decided to write this because SO MANY fans of his are expressing their concerns and it truly makes me sad, because i sometimes feel that people are missing the BIG PICTURE (no movie pun intended...hee hee). what this man is doing is going to benefit so many OTHER asian actors in the future. (hmmm...might there be ONE younger asian actor in particular?) :) (could not resist).

issy...you will REALLY see what i mean when i get part 2 posted. :)

i am posting it on vox because i can illustrate this subject better with the use of pics or video clips here. but i'm glad you think maybe it would be okay for shin forum. when i complete the entire blog, i'll see if i can maybe post a link?

now...issy chan...WOW..you have been SO MUCH HELP to jamie and SHIN forum. my GOODNESS. i need to make a post over there to thank you!
AMAZING JOB, hon. it's SO NICE to have the member list be TRUE hiro fans only. (we're so small in numbers, ne?)

i have been so busy lately that i have not been able to read many posts other than when i post news i find, but i DID see that one cartoon post you made...
(I LOVE YOU , CALL ME, ETC.) oh my god, i CRACKED UP so hard! you just slay me, issy chan. rick and i had to leave right after i read it so i haven't even been able to respond...but wanted to tell you it just MADE ME LAUGH!!!
you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny, honey.

okay, my dear sis....we'll talk soon. hope you are feeling good (you were tired?). sending lots of kisses....

pssst...and NO WAY are you a second rate hiro fan!!! i KNOW that your concern is that he does not have much screen time...we want to see MORE of our guy. in no way did i mean to suggest that about anyone. i know that everyones concern is BECAUSE they LOVE HIM. :) (...and maybe one or two others....) but we ALL know who is number one.

thanks again, issy, for sharing.

hi reiko san!

I read very interestingly.
I think that his the First phase becomes the Second phase foundation.
Hiro talks by an interview of a newspaper in 2005.

"The circumference let you do it as business, and it was the times when there was not the right that oneself chose.
I thought about the thing which oneself aimed at all the time.
Do I play as a part of entertainment activity as business?Or do I want to master road of a play?
I can change environment where oneself aims at.
Therefore I have begun to walk alone. Without a connection every elaborating.
It is work, Similarly it is the audition that the next work touches.
There is not next if I fail.
From early twenties to around 30 years old, that kind of life continued."

I think that he continues following the stance all the time!!

reiko's report is very interesting.!!!!

I look forward to future development.arigatou!!!

Hi, I came by way of Michi's blog and hope you don't mind my posting my comments. I'm originally from HK now living in the US and I follow the Asian actors intensely especially on actors that I like.

While it's true that the actresses you mentioned have studied overseas, please note that Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Chow Yun Fat have a terrible command of English when they were young. Most Hong Kong people could not speak the language although they may have been able to read it after many years of schooling. Growing up in a British colony does not guarantee that one could converse in English because back in those days, only those working in corporates would have a chance to have English exchanges with the British or American expatriates.

Both Tony Leung and Chow Yun Fat entered the entertainment industry partly because they like acting, but I guarantee you, if they had the stuff to go on to university, they would have. But getting to university is a 1/700 chance and many can't make it. And many barely made it through Form 5 (secondary school before pre-college course) and the majority flunk English.

Chow Yun Fat's English is acquired through private tutors when he was ready to move onto Hollywood. Tony Leung himself is an avid reader and expanded his interests to reading English novels and gradually became competent over the years.

I am amazed with the facility that Hiroyuki put in for his languages. Floored by his English, to put it simply. His Mandarin was sufficient in the Promise and the Chinese audience didn't mind his nor Jang Dong Gun's for that matter because they know they are not Chinese.

The reason Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung had to have Mandarin dubbers in the past is because it is a general rule for Hong Kong movies to be dubbed in Mandarin and the mainland Chinese audience is relentless about the Hong Kong accents. But in recent works, these two are using their own voices as in HERO, Curse of the Golden Flower, Lust, Caution and etc. That's is why there is such a hoola about Tony Leung in the Battle of Red Cliff by John Woo coming up of him leaving the cast and then returning - because he has to have time to prepare in learning the lines in Mandarin.

Sorry about such a long message. But I have to defend my Hong Kong actors too. hahaha...

hi rin rin san! thank you SO much for posting such VALUABLE info from our hiro, and taking the time to interpret for us, his 'thoughts' and feelings from this 2005 article. i am forever in awe, how brave and thoughtful he is, as he takes on new (fresh) challenges in his career.

his efforts to become known as an 'international' working actor (not just hollywood, i realize) are so admirable. i love where you write that he says...
"therefore, i have begun to walk alone..." because i feel that he is indeed carving out a unique and uncharted path, on many levels.

and i love your words, that his early phases lay the foundation for the next phase. i feel this way too.

rin rin....i so appreciate your feelings and thoughts, as i do NOT know him nearly as well as japan fans. i hope you understand that in no way do i mean to suggest that what i am writing is the CORRECT view. i LOVE to hear what others who might know much more have to say. i ONLY am trying to illustrate what the HOLLYWOOD hurdles he might be encountering, as i understand the INDUSTRY.

what i am trying to shed light on, in this LENGTHY manner, is HOW DIFFICULT it is for ASIAN actors (and actresses) to carve out a path in the hollywood system, by highlighting the VERY FEW asians who HAVE made a mark.

THANK YOU again, and ALWAYS, for helping me to understand our guy, and for the work you do to support him.

as ever, i appreciate that you make the effort to write in english for me. i am amazed by your skill. just like our hiro sama. :)

arigatou, rin rin san.
hi gakinme!

thanks so much for taking the time to post your comments and ESPECIALLY
for sharing your knowledge with me, and with any hiro fans who might drop in to read this blog. it is SO interesting, what you have SHARED!

please let me be clear....i am VERY much a novice when it comes to asian actors, or even films. so i appreciate ANY information that people can share with me, or with others, as i am exploring this subject.

what i do know a little (and i mean....a LITTLE) about is the way the general 'industry' system works. (or one might say, with regard to 'asians', or women over 40, DOESN'T work)

so i am trying to explore this 'issue' within the context of 'casting' as i understand it, within the hollywood system.

BTW, i LOVE tony, and chow yun is also impressive...but i know LITTLE TO NOTHING about either of them, other than the research i will do before i post. (i WILL be adding them to this 'blog' as i delve into the chinese/hong kong actors, SO ANY HELP you can offer, to correct my mistakes, or oversights is very much APPRECIATED.

your insights were GREAT, and very enlightening, about hong kong actors, and language skills.

i'm so happy you feel that our hiro sama is doing so well with english. and especially nice to hear that you felt he did a good job with his mandarin!

i heard about the 'dubbing' from a friend who is a michelle yeoh fan, and she mentioned it in a very casual, offhand remark and i was quite surprised, but she did say that it was a 'common practice' in hong kong movies. i did not explore it any further. (still working my way thru 'japan'....hee hee). i would very much
appreciate ANY sort of insights or corrections you have, as i do begin (soon)
to delve into the chinese actors. so PLEASE feel free to step in, should you care to read any of those posts.

and finally....battle of red cliff....WOW...what a mess. chow is in.
tony's in. tony's out. takeshi's in. chow is out. tony is in. what on EARTH
is that all about?

so nice to 'meet' you, gakinme. and thanks again, for taking the time to share your knowledge and thoughts.

I'm glad you didn't take offence on my defence for my favorite HK actors...haha...Btw, if you don't mind my plugging, I write about Chinese film actors in particular in my blog and the industry at large being affected by the Chinese market. I often shred the movies in pieces by the time I finish reviewing them but I'm sure if you are beginning to explore good quality Chinese films, you might enjoy reading my blog too. I don't watch too many comedic pieces and definitely not trash that's the majority of HK movies. I shy away from teenage dramas or movies from Japan and Korea unless I accidently bump into one and like it. That's why it's like a breath of fresh air when I found Hiroyuki Sanada, that Japan has someone as fluent in acting as Tony Leung and Chow Yun Fat. Nice change. Don't forget to check out Sean Lau, Francis Ng, Andy Lau. They are the best HK has to offer for the longest time and their movies are still the only ones worth watching these days (if you are older than a teenager). For Korea, check out Jang Dong Gun and Lee Byung Hun's work.

I'm Sandra, btw.
